– Venezuelan Ambassador
Underscoring his country’s continued efforts at assisting the poor, disadvantaged and underprivileged in Guyana, Venezuelan Ambassador Dario Morandy yesterday spoke of the benefits Guyanese students have been given through scholarships to advance studies at the Latin American Medical School ‘Salvador Allende’ in Caracas, with the first batch of 23 students leaving last year.
At the time he was speaking to some of the students who were back home on vacation, at a forum hosted by the Guyana-Venezuela Friendship Society at the Institute for Culture and Co-operation (IVCC) in Queenstown, Georgetown.
The ambassador told the students that they should treasure their opportunity and in turn, serve the rich and poor equally in society when they are qualified.
According to the president of the Guyana-Venezuela Friendship Society, Kawall Persaud, two batches of students were chosen for the course, one with ten and the other thirteen, however, two students dropped out of the course and some of the students from the first batch chose to return home for their first annual vacation.
He disclosed that of the 23 scholarships one was for Tourism and the rest were for Medical Doctors.
Noting that the students have embarked on a six-year course, Persaud said that when they have completed their studies they would not be compelled to serve the government.
Persaud said the embassy is eager for the recovery of Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez, since his role in the integration process in South America is well known as he has been pushing the limits for regional integration.
Chavez in July underwent a successful surgery in Cuba to remove a tumor with “cancerous cells.”
