A 36-year-old mason accused of having in his possession an illicit substance for the purpose of trafficking, was yesterday remanded to prison by Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Gresham Brisport, of Third Avenue, Wismar, Linden, was not required to plead to the indictable charge which stated that on August 15, at Omai Public Road, Essequibo, he had in his possession two pounds of cannabis.
Attorney at law Trenton Lake, in representing the accused, stated that his client was going up to Omai when police ranks conducted a search on his person. The attorney said that nothing was found on his client, and the alleged substance was found in a clump of bushes nearby that was searched by an officer.
However, Police Sergeant Lionel Harvey said the cannabis was found in a black plastic bag on the defendant’s person.
Harvey also objected to the accused being granted bail taking into consideration the prevalence and seriousness of the offence.
Bail was refused. The matter was transferred to the Bartica Magistrate’s Court, with September 1 being Brisport’s next scheduled appearance.
