Guyana was made proud once again and the Golden Arrowhead was held high when Kawall Ramkiran coped gold in the under-54kgs and silver in the open division, while Kieren Dennison earned a silver medal in the 80kgs class at the 5th Yu-Sin International Open Taekwondo Championships in Paramaribo – Suriname on the August 14.
Guyana was represented by a five-man team which was led by Coach/Master Ramjeet Ramphal and included Ramkiran, Dennision, Kevin Chin and Wayne Forde all of the Guyana Taekwondo Association (GTA).
The championship attracted fighters from the host nation Suriname, French Guiana and Guadeloupe with Guyana winning one gold and two silver medals.
According to a GTA release, there was no doubt in the mind of his Coaches that Ramkiran would have sealed gold at the event as they are very confident in Ramkiran’s skills and abilities. He has the heart, spirit and determination to win, exclaimed his Coaches.
Though Ramkiran came up against opponents higher than his level he still dominated with a resounding victory of 16-8.
In the open competition he continued to show his determination, but he was unable to cop the gold medal having to settle for the silver by a mere one point loss. Ramkiran said he was a little disappointed about not winning the gold medal in this division and had to settle for silver instead.
He has indicated that he will continue to train more diligently for his future taekwondo championships both local and international.
Kawall Ramkiran recently copped a gold medal at the 10th Caribbean Taekwondo Championships in Barbados last January.
Kieren Dennision who made his debut performance at this event stamped his authority in his first match up against the Surinamese winning him in the sudden death round, he then went on to the final match but was edged out for the gold medal by a 4-1 margin, he however, accepted the silver medal with honour for his country.
Kevin Chin and Wayne Forde also made their debut performances in their first taekwondo championships, both their performances were creditable and well above expectation, having been made to fight with opponents far above their skill level they still showed a determination to win, but was unable to cop any medals landing them in fourth and fifth place respectively, they both said they have been honoured and excited for the opportunity to represent their country and the GTA on the international scene and hope to do better at future championships.
They all have began training for their next international taekwondo championships schedule for October 2011.
Classes are held at the Guyana Teacher’s Union Hall, Woolford Avenue every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 17:00hrs to 18:30hrs.
The GTA is extending gratitude to Coach/Master Ramjeet Ramphal, Coach/Master Roy Bacchus, Liaison Officer La Toya Herbert and all other persons who made this trip a success.
