-Final payment to be made by City Hall today
Officials from Puran Brother’s Disposal Service have resumed garbage collection around the city having received some of the monies owed to them by the Mayor and City Council.
According to Company Manager Kalashwar Puran, the Council handed over a part of the money on Tuesday and is expected to provide the remainder later today. Hence, the company official said that they have resumed garbage collection in the city.
“We actually started on Tuesday but not in the full capacity. However as of today we will start back our regular routine in the different areas.”
Mr. Puran is now urging persons to place their garbage receptacles out onto the parapets so that their garbage can be easily collected.
Some three weeks ago both Puran Brothers and Cevon’s Waste Management withdrew their services for monies owed to them for services already provided.
This publication was told that the Council owes in excess of $27 M to Puran Brothers and in excess of $20M is owed to Cevon’s.
This withdrawal of the services had caused a massive garbage pile up around the city, especially around the municipal markets.
On Wednesday last President Bharrat Jagdeo announced that the government will be releasing $200M towards to the M&CC to alleviate the garbage situation. This announcement came following a meeting with several Councilors and the Deputy Mayor. Mayor Hamilton Green was not invited to the meeting. According to the Head of State, of the $200M, $81M would represent taxes from government for the second and third quarters of 2011. The remaining $119M will be utilized to pay off critical expenses, including the garbage contractors.
