Guyana’s Swim Team returned to the country after placing fourth in the 17th Goodwill Swim Meet held in at the Joao Havelange Centre of Excellence in Trinidad during August 12 -14, 2011. The countries participating in the meet were Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname, Barbados and Guyana.
In total Guyana came away with fifteen medals – 4 gold, 6 silver and 5 bronze. Britany Van Lange was outstanding capturing gold medals in the 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle events in the girls’ 13-14 age group category setting new Goodwill records in the process. She also secured silver in the 200 individual medley and 50m backstroke events, and bronze in the 100m backstroke.
Also outstanding was Trinidad-based Noelle Smith who swam in the girls’ 15-17 age group.
She captured gold in the 100m breast, silver in the 50m breast, 100m and 50m butterfly, and bronze in the 200m individual medley races. Soroya Simmons, who swam in the girls 13-14 age group, came away with two medals – silver in the 100m backstroke and bronze in the 50m backstroke events. Athena Gaskin who swam in the girls’ 15-17 age group earned a bronze in the 200m freestyle event while Ronaldo Rodrigues who swam in the boys 15-17 age group got a bronze in the 50m breaststroke.
We were unable to field four swimmers for any of the age group categories and therefore the team did not compete in any of the relay races. In the individual point standings Britany and Noelle placed second in their age group categories.
All of the swimmers achieved personal best times in three or more events – Accalia, five out of five; Soroya, 5 out of five; Onika, 4 out of five; Sheik, 3 out of 4; Britany, five out of eight; Athena, 3 out of six; Ronaldo, 3 out of seven: and, Noelle, 4 out of 10.
Out of a possible 40, Guyana only sent eight swimmers to meet and these were mainly from among the senior category. Both Trinidad and Suriname fielded full teams with Barbados also coming close to the full complement. In a repeat performance similar to last year Suriname took the championship trophy with Trinidad and Tobago coming in second, Barbados third and Guyana in the fourth position.
The Goodwill team management would like to thank the parents who gave permission for their children to travel to Trinidad to participate in the meet, the various sponsors who came up with much needed financing at short notice, and the media who provided coverage of the team’s performance during competition.
The team would especially like to thank their swim coaches Stephanie Fraser, Joanne Lowe and Sean Baksh, the latter who accompanied the team to Trinidad, and Seon Erskine their land fitness coach. They would also like to thank the various GASA officials who offered support and advice in many different ways, as well as Mrs. Kamala Van Lange who accompanied the team as chaperone.
The Goodwill Swim Meet is hosted on a rotating basis and Guyana’s turn comes up in 2012. The swimmers are looking forward to competing at home and the Goodwill 2011 team would like to encourage parents to bring out their children to more pool training and land sessions. It is only by increasing the number of swimmers and the quality of their performance that Guyana can register better overall performances at these and other Swim Meets. 2
Swimmers still have some upcoming events to look forward to for the rest of the year and these include-
