CFU Women’s Under-17 qualifiers
A thunderous free kick from about 35 yards out by Canada-based Sara Vaughn enabled Guyana to share the spoils in their CFU Women’s Under-17 qualifiers against Curacao yesterday, at the GCC ground.
The game, which ended in a 1-1 stalemate, saw Curacao take the lead through Samantha Statia whose effort came in the 37th minute of play and they took that advantage into the break.
That was after Guyana had made a hash of a plethora of chances that saw then fall behind at the end of the first period.
However, on the resumption, the Guyanese continued to attack with fervour and dominated the possession and should have gained the equaliser, but poor finishing was the order of the day.
Urged on by the sprinkling of fans, the Guyanese forwards mounted more raids on the visitors defence and a powerful shot from Ursuline Primus ricocheted off the upright and rebounded into play only to be cleared into touch by an opposition defender.
Vaughn, easily the tallest player on the field and touted as a free kick specialist underlined her ability when she netted from one, hitting a scorching pile driver in the 52nd minute that caught goalkeeper Rowina Bernadino off her line and even a valiant attempt to touch it over the bar was not enough as it sailed off her hands and landed into the back of the nets.
After that numerous opportunities presented themselves, but errant finishing and competent goalkeeping denied Guyana the ascendancy before the final whistle to signal full time sounded.
The next game in the competition which will be played tomorrow will see Curacao tangle with Anguilla over at the Uitvlugt ground, starting from 15:30hrs.
Meanwhile, Acting President of the Guyana Football Federation Franklin Wilson speaking with Kaieteur Sport shortly after the conclusion of the game said it was a good result for the team, especially when it is considered that they are relatively new to the international arena.
“They could only get better and if you had the opportunity to look at the game you could see that they progressed in terms of their technical ability and confidence,” Wilson stated.
Wilson congratulated the technical staff, adding that they really did a splendid job in getting the girls prepared for the tournament within a short period.
He mentioned Head Coach Lyndon France and the auxiliary staff Ronette Cort, Shevon Muneshwar and Andrea Fredericks as those deserving special mention.
