– commemorating 1823 Demerara revolt
As part of their emancipation celebrations, the Parbamel Community Development Youth Group will be hosting a week of events in commemoration of the 1823 Demerara Revolt.
The programme will commence on August 20 with a libation ceremony and will continue through August 28.
The cultural activity which will extend through the communities of Paradise, Bachelor’s Adventure and Melanie Damishana has a packed schedule.
Activities to be covered include lectures, a family fun-day, a literary exhibition, launching of the community’s library, historical (African) film festival, honouring of senior citizens, children’s day parade, night of poetry, and adult and children variety concert.
The rebellion broke out around August 18, 1823 for many reasons, particularly, the basic human desire to be free. The slave system was becoming increasingly harsh and the slaves misinterpreted the “amelioration proposal” for freedom, so they rebelled.
The “abortive” rebellion broke out on Plantation Le Ressouvenir, seven miles east of Georgetown, and quickly spread to many other East Coast Demerara estates. At Bachelor’s Adventure, more than 200 slaves were killed by oppressive troops.
The uprising collapsed quickly since the slaves, despite being armed, were poorly organized.
Within the inclusive areas, the youths know little or nothing about their history. Consequently, the story of the “fallen heroes”, the remembrance and honour of the ancestors, will be for the benefit of the young people of the villages.
