Nankumar Singh, the exciting lightweight pugilist from the Republican Boxing Gym will lead a strong
team of amateur boxers that appears on the August edition of the Friday Night Fights scheduled for the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) on Friday August 26.
He will oppose Marlon Darrel in what should be a crowd pleaser as all fights that involved the Republican pugilist have been. Guyana Defence Force (GDF) representative Eon Bancroft will box against Kelsie George in a middleweight affair, while Imran ‘Magic’ Khan will duke it out with Pocket Rocket Boxing gym representative, Richard Williamson in a bantamweight affair. The night’s proceedings will get underway with an 89lbs encounter between Akeem Daniels and Romel Rowley. As usual, the boxers would receive large food hampers complements of furniture giants, Courts.
Half an hour after the amateur session the big boys will take to the ring and pundits could gear up for the treat in store this month end. In a highly anticipated slugfest and after a successful start to his professional career, up and coming jnr/lightweight pugilist, Ray Sandiford will take to the ring after clinching his first international bout. His ‘luck’ came about after Clive Atwell has intimated that he would be unable to travel from his St Lucian base
to keep his ring date with Barbadian based Guyanese pugilist, Gardiel Roberts.
Sandiford, who has had a favourable amateur career, earning his license to box professionally after securing a bronze medal at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in Puerto Rico late last year, will fill the slot. To date, he has racked up two victories against Cecil Smith and Orland ‘Pocket Rocket’ Rogers and a win over Roberts could be decisive in his quality of opposition onward.
The Roberts bout should provide a stern test for him but Sandiford would have been able to assess the former fighter’s prowess
following a drubbing at the hands of Fraser. Naturally, Roberts would want to emulate the act of his fellow countryman, Revlon Lake, residing in the ‘Land of the Flying Fish,’ who had created a major upset over Mark Austin even against great odds.
Obviously, he would be the more experienced but what Sandiford lacks in this department, he compensates with skill and guts. It would be interesting to see just how he deals with such a major challenge at such an early stage of his career.
That fight apart, fans can expect much entertainment when Kwesi ‘Lightening Struck Assassin’ Jones puts his local light/heavyweight title on the line against another Barbadian based Guyanese, Cleveland Fraser. The latter fighter would be seeking redemption after the humiliating loss to local and Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) heavyweight champion, Kurt Bess in Linden recently and reports out of the Carrington Boxing gym in Barbados, where he is honing his skill, suggest that he is applying himself diligently to the task.
Another humdinger is in the making when Veronica Blackman, initially scheduled to face Mandessa Moses, takes on the exciting, Pauline London, in a highly anticipated thriller after Moses cited certain difficulties that precluded her from adequate preparations thus pulling out of the bout.
Revlon Lake, fresh from his upset victory over Austin will also be out to prove that it was no fluke when he opposes Cecil Smith over 4 rounds. The latter fighter has not been enjoying the best of times in the ‘square jungle’ and would obviously regard this bout as the perfect redeeming factor. Should he get past the powerful fists of Lake it will be a major hurdle towards his reinstatement among the top contenders in his division. This should serve as the catalyst to an improved performance and boxing buffs could anticipate the unfolding action.
The ProAm boxing cards are an initiative of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control in collaboration with the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA), National Communications Network (NCN) and the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports. Admission remains at $1000 for adults and half that amount for children. NCN would carry a live broadcast from 20:00hrs when the first bell sounds.
