Twenty-three year-old Ewart Hescott, who was shot after he tried defending his uncle, Emanuel Evans, has been admitted as patient at the Georgetown Hospital.
Reports are that Evans, 42, who owned a grocery store in the Powis Backdam, Five Star, North West District area was shot in the chest, while Hescott was shot to the upper leg. Evans succumbed to his injury.
Hescott told Kaieteur News yesterday that his uncle was enquiring from the suspect about an unpaid debt.
“He was asking him about a grocery bill that was not paid and they started arguing.”
The suspect then reportedly whipped out a pistol and began lashing Evans to the face with the weapon.
At this point his nephew (Hescott) intervened, and the suspect pointed the gun towards Evans and fired once, striking the man in the chest. The nephew was then shot in the leg. Hescott said that he managed to run away and hide in a clump of bushes to avoid further injury. He was eventually assisted by friends to the Port Kaituma Hospital for treatment, before being transferred to the city.
Police sources yesterday told Kaieteur News that the suspect was still on the run. Meanwhile unconfirmed reports have suggested that Evans’ body might still be in the interior location.
He previously resided at lot 60 Kuru-Kururu, Soesdyke/Linden Highway.
According to a police press release, investigations so far reveal that the two men went to the businessman’s shop where they requested goods on credit. The businessman refused and an argument ensued during which it is alleged that the businessman pulled out a firearm and shot the men.
According to Kenesha Hescott, the niece of the deceased and the sister of Ewart Hescott, her uncle had been in the interior location since September, last.
She said her uncle and brother were working in the “gold bush” and the family received a phone call early Monday morning with the shocking news.
The woman pointed out that after contacting the Port Kaituma police station to enquire about the body of her uncle and other information relating to the incident that led to his demise and the shooting of her brother, she received no cooperation.
