Dear Editor,
I am 7 years old and I live in Cumberland, East Canje Berbice and I love animals. I like reading the newspaper articles about animals and I must say I am always sad when I see animals being mistreated, getting sick and dying. I would like to see an animal shelter and rescue center opened in the Berbice area. There are so many strays and mistreated animals here. It was very sad seeing the front page of your newspaper with those poor animals dying at that Police Station.
Mr. Editor, I wish the world had more people that care about and respect animals. Some of the horse/donkey carts owners also overwork their animals and sometimes whip them to carry an overloaded cart over the Canje bridge while they are sitting on the cart too.
I have seen this on many occasions on my way to and back from school. A few times I roll the windows of our car down to shout at them to stop that. But they don’t listen. I think we should have some sort of animal inspector/police to look out for them. We should also have laws prosecuting those who mistreat animals with serious punishment so others wouldn’t dare try repeating that.
Lastly, I must say I spend most of my holidays on a farm with my grandparents and we treat our animals well. I am overjoyed at the birth of a new lamb and though I am always picking up stray kittens it is rewarding for I have fun playing with them. I hope my letter inspires others to be more conscious and thoughtful of our animals. And thanks to my mom for proof reading my letter. She is the Best! God Bless!
