– Acting President urges Guyanese to support the game
Acting President of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Franklin Wilson speaking at a press briefing to update the media on preparations for today’s CFU Under-17 women’s qualifier between host Guyana and Curacao at the GCC ground, Bourda, urged all Guyanese to come out in their numbers and support the locals.
Wilson, who recently took over the stewardship of the Federation after FIFA provisionally suspended President Colin Klass, said that the team is a very inexperienced one in terms of international exposure, adding that the process of developing women’s football has started and even though the programme is relatively young, the focus will be steadfast from now on.
The team, which has been encamped for over three weeks and includes one player from overseas in Sara Vaughn, who resides in Canada, is made up of players from all parts of the country.
Acting President of the GFF Franklin Wilson (third right) makes a disclosure in the presence of local and visiting officials yesterday.
According to Manager Colin Baker, players from West Demerara, Berbice, Lethem and other parts of the country have been chosen with five of them coming out of the Scotia Bank / Pepsi Academy which was conducted earlier this year.
Baker referred to the players’ selection as testimony to the benefit of the Academy, adding that it just shows if there are more such programmes what could be achieved.
He stated that they are extremely excited to host the games, adding that the girls have come along nicely and are comfortable and looking to produce a good performance in front of the home crowd.
Baker referred to the programme which started sometime ago with the senior Lady Jaguars and pointed to their achievements as a reference to the path they intend to continue on with the junior squad.
Meanwhile, Assistant Coach of the visiting team Urwin Sille in his remarks disclosed that they’ve been preparing for the tournament for the past three months and they’re confident of doing well.
He said that they’ve chosen players based in Holland and Bonaire as well and he expects them to produce a solid performance come today.
“We are in form and we play a 3-3-4 system, but that is all I will reveal at this time,” Sille said.
The Guyana team will come from: Shonette Gaspar (goalkeeper), Dian Mandokin, Shenezze Henry, Jenelle Brown, Kerry Thomas, Althea Holligan, Anaiida Walker, Prescilla Allan, Everne Ambrose, Sara Vaughn, Ursuline Primus, Beverley Rodrigues, Rachel Subick, Keshana Hunte, Tasnica Lovell, Sasha Loo, Keishell Moore, Keisha Gordon, Jamacie Petty, Victoria WongLisa Perreira and Alicia Sampson.
The Curacao squad will be chosen from: Rowino Bernadino (Goalkeeper), Mirlam Rosa, Shade Desir, Marienne Djaoen, Jenueviene Casper, Radira Alberto, Sullyviene Noten, Samantha Statia, Richeida Overman, Ruhayna Stroop, Sterre Noordhoek, Milisa Bacuna, Angelique Antonio, Deborah Marceli, Tiera Petronillia, Jandelly Ricardo, Jeandelline Mathilda and Loelle Thode.
The game starts at 15:30 hrs, while the other team in the competition Anguilla is expected to arrive today.
