A teenager failed to adhere to the age-old warning “never bite the hand that feeds you” and is now a temporary guest of the state after his attempt to steal a car failed miserably yesterday.
The car belongs to the Priest of the St. John the Baptist Church, at Plaisance, and the 18-year-old alleged perpetrator is a former resident of the church’s orphanage.
He was held by police yesterday during a massive manhunt following the theft.
Kaieteur News understands that the young man had already made arrangements with a known character for the sale of the car, a Toyota Carina AT 212.
This newspaper was reliably informed that in a well thought out plan, the young man duped the priest into leaving the car unattended by telling him that someone had died and requested that he did the customary thing by tolling the church’s bell.
When the Priest left to ring the bell, the young man who hardly knows how to drive, removed the vehicle from its usual parking spot in the church’s compound and was heading out of the village when he ran into a ditch.
With the help of an accomplice, who is also a former resident of the orphanage, he subsequently managed to take it out and headed towards the city.
According to reports, the church’s Priest noticed the car was missing at around midday yesterday and reported the matter to the police at Sparendaam.
Mobile patrols were then alerted and one of them intercepted the vehicle in the vicinity of Ogle.
However the occupants abandoned the car and sought refuge in the Ogle cemetery – but their freedom was brief.
The ranks requested back-up and several ranks responded and surrounded the cemetery where they managed to capture the accomplice, while the main culprit remained free. But with the assistance of residents the prime suspect was eventually caught and handed over to the police.
