The Leeward Islands fell like poisoned flies from the sky as Jamaica, Champs of this year’s three-day U-19 Regional Cricket Tournament, swiped them for 83 in 26.4 overs, at the Everest Cricket Club, yesterday in the final round of the one day U-19 Regional Cricket Tournament.
The Leewards crumbled before lunch as Fabian Allen, Martino Mindley, James McDonald, John Campbell and Rovman Powell combined to dismiss the Islanders cheaply.
Shaquille Martina and Skipper Rahkeem Cornwall opened the batting for the Leewards but Martina who scored 65 in the third round against Barbados but his day yesterday was overcast with dark clouds. He was caught by Campbell off the first delivery of the day from Mindley.
Cornwall, who is known for hitting spectacular sixes and fours, managed just 5 before his stumps were rattled by McDonald.
Duan Webbe (25) faced 30 balls and lashed one six and three fours before he departed while Elijah Peters (1) and Akeal Saunders (2) were caught off Mindley and McDonald respectively to leave the Leewards on 41-5 and they never recovered despite 17 from Triston Handley and 13 from Nino Henry.
In reply, the Jamaicans reached 84-3 off 14.3 overs as Campbell’s unbeaten 58 contributed tremendously to his team’s win after his fifty came from 51 balls.
Henry captured the wickets of Walters (7) and Gayle (1), while Archibald had Powell for 6 in a losing effort for the Leewards.
