Garbage collection ‘should recommence tomorrow’

If all goes well garbage collection around the city will recommence tomorrow as the Mayor and City Council has promised to clear off its debt to contractors.
An official of one of the entities, Puran Brothers, told this publication that they were invited to a meeting with City Hall yesterday and were given all assurances that the monies owed to the company would be paid in full today. The official further stated that once the money is paid the company will recommence services around the city.
Some three weeks ago, Puran Brothers and Cevon’s Waste Management had withdrawn their services for monies owed to them for services already provided.
This publication was told that the council owes over $27M to Puran Brothers and in excess of $20M to Cevon’s. The contractors are said to be owed for work done between March and July.
Over the past few weeks, the cash-strapped Council has been promising the disposal companies payment, but nothing has since materialized. The recent withdrawal of service has caused massive garbage pile-ups around the city, most common around the municipal markets.
However, to cushion the situation, the Mayor and City Council has been using four garbage trucks which they managed to acquire, to ease the garbage crisis. In addition, some persons have been paying individuals to remove garbage from their premises at a small cost.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, last, it was announced that government would be releasing a little over $200M to alleviate the problem. This announcement came following a meeting between the President, the Deputy Mayor and several councillors. The Mayor was not invited to the meeting. According to the Head of State, of the $200M, $81M would represent taxes from government for the second and third quarters of 2011, while the remaining $119M would be utilized to pay off critical expenses, including the garbage contractors.
