male and female team titles in the ongoing Caribbean and Regional Table Tennis Federation (CRTTF) Championships at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The Dominican Republic defeated Trinidad and Tobago 3-2 in the finals of both the men’s and women’s competition. Guyana finished third in both categories with the women beating Barbados 3-0 and the men sharing the position with Barbados.
The Dominican Republic’s Juan Vila Jr. opened impressively for his team when he thrashed Trinidad’s, Micheal Nanton 11-8, 11-5 and 11-9. Emil Santos then surprised the highly rated, Dexter St. Louis with an 11-7, 10-12, 11-8, 6-11 and 11-5 win.
However, Cutis Humphreys gave Trinidad a lifeline with his 8-11, 11-9, 6-11, 11-7 and 11-9 triumph against Samuel Malvez. St. Louis then extended that lifeline with an 11-8, 11-6 and 14-12 win against Vila, setting up a thrilling final match.
But Santos, who toppled St. Louis earlier, was obviously the lynchpin for the Dominican Republic team. It was smooth sailing for him in the deciding match against Nanton. He whipped him 11-3, 11-3 and 11-3 to hand the Dominican Republic the title.

The women followed suit with a similar result against Trinidad and Tobago. Guyana’s women defeated Barbados in straight sets to secure bronze. Guyana’s Trenace Lowe defeated Sharice Felix 11-5, 11-5 and 11-6; Michelle John whipped Krystle Harvey 12-10, 11-7 and 11-9 and Natalie Cummings beat Ann Reid 11-8, 11-8 and 11-7 for the hosts.
The competition continues today from 10am with the doubles and mixed doubles events.
