Food for the Poor (Guyana Inc.) and the St Francis Community Developers on Friday presented over $20M dollars worth in materials to four families in East Berbice who were affected by recent fires, which completely gutted their homes.
President of St Francis Community Developers and of the Food for the Poor organization Alex Foster made the donation and presentation on behalf of the two organizations.
The victims, Kawaldeo Persaud and Ranita Sukhra and their four children Devindra Persaud,14, Rupesh Sukhra,12, Aruna Persaud,11, and four-year-old Darshini Sukhra lived at Lot 158 Williamsburg Squatting area. Their home was destroyed by fire on the July 6 while they were away at a religious activity.
Krishna Latchman and his common law wife Indrawattie Totoram were living at Fourth Street Squatting area Williamsburg Corentyne when that dwelling was set alight by another brother of Krishna who was under the influence of alcohol.
He was subsequently charged with unlawfully and maliciously setting fire to the dwelling house. He pleaded guilty and was subsequently jailed for three months.
Evroy Bart and his wife Doreen Sutherland and their four children, Natoya Bart 18 a school teacher, Sheena Bart, 16, Elroy Bart, 14, and Shaina Bart, 11, who is in primary school of 66 King Street Cumberland East Canje home had their home destroyed by fire in June, while they were away at church. They had been residing there for over eight years since December 2002.
The last family to be assisted was Miss Angela Inshanally of Lot 17, Adelphi Village East Canje Berbice who just a few days ago suffered at the hands of her reputed husband who allegedly burned down their home after a domestic dispute on the 8th August. The couple has five daughters aged 16 (twins), 14, 12 and six years old. The suspect is still on the run.
Each family was assisted with beds, bed side cupboards, clothing, sewing machines, stoves garden and kitchen utensils among numerous other items.
Apart from Food for the Poor and St Francis Community Developers, Comfort Sleep also donated mattresses and clothing to the victims through the charity organizations.
