Dear Editor,
I could swear I was going to have a heart attack from laughing after reading Kaieteur News’ article titled “PPP postpones congress to focus on general elections” (KN, August 10, 2011). It isn’t funny but I just couldn’t help laughing. It is actually frightening. This is the boldest display of mockery yet by the handful running the show from Freedom House. The PPP Central Committee bigwigs, the same people with Pradoville homes, Lexus vehicles and fat government positions paying hefty salaries, unanimously “agreed to postpone the holding of the Party’s 30th Congress which was constitutionally due this year in order to focus its full attention on the upcoming elections.” There are kicks to the face. There is kick down door banditry. Then there is this kind of kick to the heart and soul of PPP supporters. A handful of men and women told the 183,867 PPP supporters who stood in the hot sun for hours in 2006 to vote for them to put it simply: go to hell. They said we don’t care. It was a sad indictment of how the PPP hierarchy views the poor man at the bottom voting for it. The PPP big boys not only tossed the party’s Constitution in the garbage but it tossed those 183,867 voters who voted for the Cup in 2006 with it.
This is a brazen slap in the face of the supporters of the PPP. It shows the supporters who is really boss. These guys don’t care. They don’t care because those that show up and vote for them election after election allow them to don’t care. Ramotar, Jagdeo and friends must really think they could win the election by kicking PPP supporters while they are down. In this very act of discarding the Constitution written by Cheddi Jagan and others who wanted working class representation and participation by holding these conferences to bring supporters together, the PPP kingpins of today made a telling move and sent a powerful message to its supporters. They basically said to the PPP voters out there that ‘we control you.’ That no matter the wrongdoing, perversity or immorality we commit against you, you will come out and support us. This is a phenomenon of psychological domination, mind control, intellectual tyranny and emotional dictatorship. You have to admire the guts of these guys. On the eve of an election they have expressed to their supporters that they don’t need to meet with them or hear from them or talk to them or let them ask them questions. This is like the terrible master who kicks and abuses an animal and expects it to always crawl back to him.
The PPP had 220 days this year to hold a Congress. It still has almost five months left to hold a Congress. Yet, the top dogs running the show just don’t care. The small man who is dying to feed himself and who votes PPP does not matter. Ramotar, Jagdeo, Robert Persaud, Ashni Singh and the rest never really cared to hold a congress. They have denied a voice to the grassroots PPP supporter who wanted to explain how chicken at $400 per pound is killing him and his family. The PPP knows it can engage in psychological damage and political torture and people will always lie to themselves even when they are being kicked when down. It is the crime that race commits every election in this country among the two main ethnic groups. The poor and powerless that placed that X on the Cup in 2006 now sees the cup that runneth empty for them but is full for the band at Freedom House.
This is a case of Donald Ramotar, the same man running for President, who took over the General Secretary role from Cheddi Jagan disfiguring Cheddi Jagan’s legacy as General Secretary of the PPP. This is Donald Ramotar and the Jagdeo clique afraid to face the poor and the powerless and the grassroots of their party. This is the henchmen atop the PPP deciding that crushing dissent by suspending the PPP’s constitutionally mandated congress is better than allowing freedom, democracy and the rights of its own party members and supporters. This is a version of the PPP that is too far gone from its own supporters. A version of a party that is making a mockery of its own. Donald Ramotar, Bharrat Jagdeo, Robert Persaud and the rest controlling the Central Committee are running an internal dictatorship within the PPP. They are no different from Forbes Burnham.
