Samuel Whyte
With over $20 million in total sponsorship at stake for the August 21 Jumbo Jet Guyana Cup Horse Race Meet, including a hefty $375,000 from Digicel, the Organisers are putting everything in place to have a successful and competitive event that will set tongues wagging long after it has been completed.
Notwithstanding the large amount of activities planned for the summer holidays, the sport known as the king of sports has been enjoying overwhelming support from a wide cross section of sporting fans.
Organisers, sponsors and racing stables and the various turf clubs have plugged multi millions of dollars into Meets which has made it one of the most lucrative sports in Guyana.
The Guyana Cup since its introduction some five years ago has been setting an unprecedented pace for other sponsors to follow with some massive injection of funds by the Jumbo Jet establishment and other corporate entities including Banks DIH Limited and Digicel.
For the fifth running of the Cup, the organisers have come up with record prize money for the one day meet which doubles last year’s offering of $10M, making it the largest Meet by far in the country.
Eleven races are carded for the day which makes it the most in a one day event and with little over a week remaining, already over 100 of the country’s best horses have taken entry.
A number of jockeys from overseas including, Canada, Jamaica, Trinidad, USA and Barbados will be in Guyana to throw down the gauntlet against their Guyanese counterparts, while a number of local riders based overseas will be making the trek home to be a part of the event.
The distance for the A class event has been increased to 1800M with a whopping $2M and the Guyana Cup up for grabs. The total prize monies on offer stand close to $4M.
The other events are all mouth watering affairs with the co-feature 3 year-old event for horses born and bred in Guyana and the West Indies being a 1500M event with the winner racing away with $1.5M and trophy. The 2 year-old event for West Indies bred horses has its first prize tagged at $1million plus trophy over1000M.
The E class and lower 1500M event will see the winner take away $800,000 and trophy. The race for F class horses will see the winner receive $700,000 and trophy over 1000M
The three year-old Derby for Guyana bred horses has a $600,000 first prize offer over 1200M.
The G & Lower race is another 1000M event where the winning horse will run away with $500,000 and trophy. The two year-old event for Guyana bred horses also has a $500,000 prize tag for the first finisher along with a trophy in another 1000M event. The H& Lower 1200M race guarantees the winning horse a purse of $400,000 and trophy. The ‘I’ and lower race also goes over 1200M with the winnings being tagged at $200,000. There is $150,000 plus trophy for the winner of the ‘I’ & Lower maiden event over 1200M.
The top Jockey along with the runner up, top stable and champion trainer will all be presented with accolades compliments of Ramesh Sunich of The trophy Stall Bourda Market and the organisers. Apart from the riveting action expected on the track, there will also be lots of added attractions, including Games for adults and kids.
There will also be giveaways for the first 2000 people entering the venue, including hats and t-shirts
A number of improvements have been made at the venue, including extending the grand stand to cater for a few thousands more spectators, running water and improved viewing among others.
The track is also being graded and rolled constantly and some record breaking times are anticipated.
The activity which has become a calendar event has been organised also to capture the thousands of overseas-based Guyanese and other visitors on holiday.
