– Hundreds of millions in estimated losses
Hundreds of millions in valuables went up in smoke early yesterday morning as a fire consumed the Transport and Harbours Department (TH&D) Storage Bond on Urquhart Street and an adjacent building, while a third structure was badly scorched.
The other burnt-out structure was the old Beharry building, which housed a mechanic shop, while Ming’s boat-building facility was scorched. Two guard huts were all that was left standing in the immediate vicinity. There were no reports of injuries.
Minister of Transport, Robeson Benn, confirmed that millions of dollars in spares for various vessels were destroyed in the T&HD facility.
Fire Chief Marlon Gentle confirmed that the fire station received a call at 01:10hrs yesterday and it was reported that the blaze originated in the T&HD Bond.
He noted that the firefighters, who arrived with three tenders, tried to contain the inferno. However, because of the many inflammable items that were stored in the buildings, and an abrupt squall, their best efforts essentially became an exercise in futility.
He further indicated that investigations had already begun to ascertain the origin of the fire.
Residents said that they heard several loud explosions after the fire erupted in the T&HD Bond. Some persons related that they fled their homes after they noticed that the blaze was spreading rapidly.
Residents also said several batches of policemen were at the scene and persons who removed items from their homes sought police protection.
Several hours after the blaze had abated, utility personnel from the Guyana Power & Light and Guyana Telephone & Telegraph Company were seen repairing damaged lines that were left exposed.
