Regional U-19 cricket round three
By Sean Devers
Guyana rebounded from their first round loss to defending Champions Trinidad and Tobago by beating the Leeward Islands in their second round game on Tuesday and will aim to hand three-day champions Jamaica their third consecutive defeat to when the teams clash at DCC from 09:30hrs today.
The Guyanese changed their batting order after repeated failures from the top order and spinner Jomal Lafluer hit an unbeaten half century in an unfinished 73-run second wicket partnership with pacer Clinton Pestano who was promoted to the number three spot ahead of the team’s leading batsman Chanderpaul Hemraj and West Indies Under-19 left-hander Kwame Crosse.
Dominique Rihki also batted well in his new position as opener before he carelessly waltzed down the track and was stumped to break the 51-run opening partnership.
West Indies Under-19 pacer Ronsford Beaton took four wickets to give the South Americans a .4 of a point extra for wickets taken by pacers.
Left-arm spinner Anthony Adams continued his impressive run with three wickets and West Indies Under-19 leg-spinner Amir Khan collected two for the Guyanese whose main threat today could be the explosive West Indies Under-19 batsman John Campbell.
Ramon Senior, Teswayne Creary and Bryan Gayle are also competent batsmen for the lads from Reggae Country.
Despite being the most successful 3-day team in the Region at this level, Guyana have never won a Regional one-day title and Donavon Nelson could be their biggest worry with the ball but he cannot bowl more than 10 overs on the small ground and as a team the Jamaicans will be keen to bounce back and win their last three matches to try and win the tournament.
Trinidad and Tobago is the most successful team in Regional one-day cricket which began in Trinidad in 1998 and today they face the Windward Islands at Bourda while Barbados who like the Trinis, have won both of their opening matches, face-off with the Leeward Islands at Everest in the other third round game today.
