By Sean Devers
Captain Ronsford Beaton took 4-28 and got support from Anthony Adams (3-29)
Jomal Lafluer (right) and Clinton Pestano shared in an unfinished half century partnership to see Guyana to victory against the Leewards at Everest yesterday.
and Jomal LaFluer who grabbed 2-26 and hit an unbeaten 53 to spearhead Guyana to an emphatic 9-wicket win against the Leeward Islands at Everest in their second round Regional Under-19 one-day cricket match yesterday.
In hot conditions on a slow turner the Leewards were never able to dominate the spin-based Guyana attack after First Class pacer Beaton removed both openers to leave the Islanders on 24-2.
Daun Webb (10) was trapped leg before at 3-1 before Beaton, who was born in Montserrat got rid of Wasim Mintos for two.
Beaton, one of three West Indies Under-19 players in the Guyana side soon had Shaquille Martina for a duck at 29-3 and when Adams got rid of the dangerous Rakheem Cornwall for five the Leewards were in trouble at 39-4.
West Indies youth player Akeem Saunders looked good but just when he seemed set for a big score he was removed by Adams for 36 from 30 balls with two fours at 82-5.
It was soon 89-6 when Nino Henry was taken at short third man off Adams for 26 while Larry Audain (8) was leg before to Amir Khan at 100-7 and LaFleur bowled Tristan Hanley for five without addition to the score.
Daniel Doram offered some resistance with an unbeaten 14 but Beaton and La Fleur wrapped up the innings.
Guyana reached 33 -0 from seven overs by Lunch with new openers Dominique Rikhi (16) and LaFleur (15) unbeaten at the interval. After the interval the pair took Guyana to 51 before Rikhi (31) walked down the track to the burly Cornwall and was stumped.
Damon Parris has his leg stump disturbed by Guyana pacer Ronsford Beaton who took four wickets yesterday to help his team to victory against the Leewards.
Pestano, promoted ahead of specialist batsmen Chanderpaul Hemraj and Kwame Crosse, made 31 not out as he added 72 in the unfinished second wicket partnership with La Fleur, who faced 55 balls and stuck five fours, to see Guyana home.
Guyana will face Jamaica tomorrow at DCC while the Leewards take on Barbados at Everest. Windwards battle T&T at Bourda in the other third round game tomorrow.
