HERO, made up of Guyanese Doctors (Medical & Surgical) residing in the USA (New York & Florida) is in Guyana on yet another Outreach Programme that is being facilitated by HELP Guyana, a non-governmental organisation and other agencies.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport yesterday, Dr. Harrison Mitchell said that they were very pleased to perform medical examinations on members of the National Under-17 team stating that met President of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Colin Klass at the final of the recently concluded GT&T FastBall championship.
“Colin and I grew up in the same area and when we met at the FastBall competition he asked me if the team can do a medical evaluation of the players and that’s what we are doing now (yesterday).”
“It’s a pleasure for us to be able offer back to the team, it was nice talking to the young ladies and they are very confident; one of them promise me that they were going to win and make the country proud so it’s good for us to be able to contribute.”
Dr. Mitchell informed that the players are very healthy and that team performed regular physical examinations, complete blood count, kidney functions as well as checks for diabetes. The checks were done at the Project Dawn facilities.
The HERO Mission has been visiting Guyana since 2000 when the operation was only done in Region 10 but ever since the floods in 2005, they have also established a branch in Georgetown.
The team visits Guyana twice yearly, Easter and during the August holidays. Two Third Year Medical students from University of Guyana are also working along with the HERO Team; Charles Corbin is the local Coordinator.
Manager of the Lady Jags team Colin Baker expressed gratitude on behalf of the team and the GFF to Dr. Mitchell and the entire team for their services noting that their contribution has boosted the morale and confidence of the team ahead of next week’s qualifying competition.
Guyana will host Anguilla and the Netherlands Antilles in a three-country playoff from August 17 to 21.
Guyana will face Netherlands Antilles on August 17 at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence from 15:30hrs; Anguilla and Netherlands Antilles clash on the 19th with the Lady Jags opposing Anguilla on the 21st. The venue and times for the second and final day of competition will be released shortly since the National Stadium will not be available. One team will advance to the next stage of the competition.
Meanwhile, training resumed yesterday for the Lady Jags after a one week break following two weeks of intense preparations.
Manager Baker reported Canada based mid-fielder Sara Vaughn has joined the squad while three players from Kamarang and one from Bartica were expected to check in yesterday as preparations heighten under Head Coach Lyndon France who is being assisted by Andrea Fredericks, Chevon Monchoir and Ronette Cort, former goalkeeper of the Senior Lady Jags.
