This year the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) will be observing its annual Mining Week under the theme “Evolving methods, Embracing excellence, Enjoying success”.
The week-long celebration which commences on August 21 will conclude on August 27 with the highly anticipated Porkknocker’s Day festivities in Bartica.
Manager of the GGMC’s Petroleum Division, Mr. Newell Dennison, in an invited comment on the upcoming event, said the activities will kick off with a ‘Mining Week Walk’ on the 21st. The walk will begin at the Bank of Guyana Building and end at the Girl Guides Pavilion on Brickdam.
Next on the calendar will be a two-day forum – the 9th National Mining & Quarrying Conference (Aug 22-23) – at the Ocean View Convention Centre at Liliendaal. This meeting will deal with a range of issues all related to mining, safe practices and environmental concerns, among others. The conference will also feature presentations by petroleum industry leaders in Guyana: – Repsol-YPF; Exxon Mobil; Shell; Tullow; CGX; Takutu Oil and Gas Inc/Canacol.
As in previous years there will also be the popular mining exhibition. However, this year the display will be held at the Ocean View Convention Centre tarmac and not the traditional Girl Guides Pavilion. The exhibition will run from August 22-24 and will be free of cost.
According to Mr. Dennison, this year the event is being co-sponsored by Repsol-YPF and will feature mining equipment which is currently available on the local market. There will also be a forum on global energy.
The week of activities, as indicated, will conclude with the annual Porkknocker Day which will be held at the Regatta Pavilion, Golden Beach, Bartica, on August 27.
