Much to the displeasure of relatives of the three persons who were killed in last Saturday’s accident in Arimu, Cuyuni, the driver of the truck, Dellon Bobb, has been granted station bail to the tune of $50,000.
According to reports, after being discharged from the Bartica Hospital, Bobb was kept in police custody briefly and was on Tuesday released on bail. In the meantime this publication was told that the police are still investigating and are awaiting advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
On Saturday morning last, 29-year-old Joseph Perez and his wife Sheleza Perez, of Third Avenue, Bartica, and Xavier Anthony of Norton Street Wortmanville were all pronounced dead on arrival at the Bartica Hospital. The three were killed and several others injured after a truck GMM 2441 turned turtle while heading up a hill into Quatrz Stone, a mining location located several miles from Bartica.
Dellon Bobb, Marlon Bamfield, Michael Jones, Nigel Joseph, Ivan Garraway and Olinda George, were all injured. According to a police report, at the time of the accident, the truck was proceeding along a trail with a load of fuel and nine passengers – seven of whom were in the tray of the vehicle – when the driver lost control while negotiating a turn on a hill. There are reports that Perez died after a dredge impeller which was in the tray of the truck, smashed into his head. His wife was reportedly crushed by fuel tanks.
