Horseracing continues to take Guyana by storm and come Sunday August 21 the biggest sporting Event in Guyana will be staged in the form of the Fifth Annual Guyana Cup horserace meet at the Port Mourant Turf Club.
Organized by one of Guyana’s leading horseracing establishments, the Jumbo Jet Auto Sales and racing stables of Bush Lot and Chester Villages, West Coast Berbice and with offices on the East Bank Demerara and Georgetown, the organizers have come up with over $20M in prizes, making it one of the largest sporting event in Guyana.
Known as the king of sports, horseracing is rivaling for the number one status in sports in the country with by far the largest prize money on offer for any sport in the country. The Jumbo Jet meet is thus offering big winnings for the races.
11 races are carded for the day including several feature events. There are events for A class horses, two events for three year old horses, two for two year old horses and another race for horses classified E and lower. While the event for E and G class horses are also big drawing cards.
The A class event has A class money on offer with a whopping sum of close to $4M at stake in cash and prizes with the winner taking home the lavish $2M prize and the Guyana Cup trophy battling over 1500M.
The Co-feature 3 yr old event for horses Bred and Born in Guyana and the West Indies and the organizers have put up a mouth watering $1.5M for the winner, with the horses set to race over 1600M.
The 2 year old event for West Indies Bred horses has its first prize tagged at $1,000,000 plus trophy and is over 1000M. The E class and lower 1500M race will see the winner racing away with the $800,000 top prize and trophy.
There is a race for F class horses with the winner getting $700,000 and trophy over 1000M.
The second three year old event is for Guyana bred horses and has a $600,000 purse along with trophy for the top runner.
The G & Lower race is another 1000M event where the winner will run away with $500,000 and trophy. The second two year old event is for Guyana bred horses and also has $500,000 on offer for the top runner along with a trophy covering 1000M.
The H& Lower 1200M race guarantees the winner’s purse set at $400,000 along with trophy.
The ‘I’ and lower race also goes over 1200M with the winnings being tagged at $200,000.
There is $150,000 plus trophy for the winner of the ‘I’ & Lower maiden event over 1200M.
The top Jockey along with the runner up, the top stable and Champion trainer will all be presented with accolades compliments of Ramesh Sunich of the Trophy Stall, Bourda Market and the organizers. Entries closed on Thursday August 11 at the Jumbo Jet’s Bush Lot Office, West Coast Berbice.
First 2000 persons at the venue will get free giveaways including hats and t-shirts.
