“Merundoi” pulled from airwaves

– NCN says decision temporary

The National Communications Network (NCN) has pulled the radio serial drama “Merundoi” from the airwaves.
When contacted last night, Head of the Merundoi unit, Margaret Lawrence, told Kaieteur News that she was notified yesterday.
“I’m not able to fully comment on the issue….but I was contacted by Mr. (Martin) Goolsarran about the programme being pulled.”
Lawrence said that she has requested an audience with the relevant authority.
According to sources, the programme was pulled because it placed emphasis on racial tolerance and harmony in the run-up to and during the elections, encouraging persons not to vote race but rather to focus on the issues.
The programme was being funded by USAID. The programme recently received a grant from the said organisation to incorporate a racial harmony theme.
Thus the producers decided to build a theme around the upcoming elections and the need to vote on issues and not race.
Meanwhile, when this newspaper contacted Production Manager Martin Goolsarran, he said that the decision was temporary.
He disclosed that they were having concerns with the content of the programme. He could not reveal what the “concerns” were but promised to make it public within a couple of days.
Only recently CNS Channel 6 dropped the “Keeping Them Honest” programme which was hosted by Ramon Gaskin and attorney-at-law/columnist, Christopher Ram.
The station’s managing director, Chandra Narine Sharma, indicated to the hosts that the programme would be discontinued with immediate effect.
According to Sharma, the decision was taken for regulatory reasons following a conversation he had with the relevant authorities concerning the content of the programme.
