Millions went up in flames as five persons were left homeless following a fire at 7 Hague Public Road, West Coast Demerara, last Wednesday.
One of the tenants, Carmen Garcia, told this newspaper that she is still in a state of distress and disbelief after what had occurred. The senior citizen said that she resided with her husband and three grandchildren at the two-storey home that was badly burnt.
Garcia could hardly estimate her loss but disclosed that she has lost everything except for her washing machine and a suitcase with her husband’s clothes.
The distraught woman stated that she is thankful for her husband’s employer who is providing the family with a beautiful home and all that they need for the time being.
She is not sure how long they will be staying there but is trying to recover as soon as possible.
Garcia told Kaieteur News that her only two children work in the interior. She disclosed that one has since come home upon receiving news of the fire. The woman suggests that her other son has not yet learnt of the fire and that is the reason why he isn’t home.
She also noted that flights leaving the interior area can be fairly difficult to book at times. In addition, Garcia said that the transportation fee is relatively expensive.
At around 11:00 hours last Wednesday the two-storey home of James and Carmen Garcia was destroyed by fire which started at the front of the house.
Fortunately for the family, a crew from the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) was in the area at the time and disconnected the power from the burning building. It was the same crew that summoned fire tenders to the scene.
While the fire tenders were on their way, kind hearted neighbours formed a bucket brigade to assist in putting out the fire. Others used fire extinguishers.
Unfortunately, by the time the fire tenders arrived, most of the building had already been destroyed.
