The opening round of this years’ Regional under-19 limited overs competition begins today in Guyana and defending champions Trinidad and Tobago battle host Guyana at Bourda in one of three first round matches.
Newly crowned three-day champions, Jamaica, face Barbados at the Guyana National Stadium, while dethroned three-day champions, Windward Islands, face the Leeward Islands at DCC in the other games today.
T&T will look to Steven Katwaroo (captain), Savion Lara, Kieron Joseph, Akeal Hosein and Emmanuel Left with the bat while the leading bowler in the three-day tournament left-arm spinner Derone Davis along with Jovan Ali and Idrees Mohammed, should continue to enjoy the spin-friendly Guyana pitches.
Guyana scored 317-9 declared in their first three-day match but struggled badly in the remaining games in the rain hit competition and were dismissed twice in successive match for single digits totals.
Chanderpaul Hemraj and Kwame Crosse were the only Guyanese to register fifties in the three-day format, while Kevon Boodie, Dominique Rikhi and Jomal LaFluer will be depended on to get ‘scores’ in the one-day version.
Although their skipper Ronsford Beaton is the quickest bowler in the competition and Clinton Pestano bowled well in the three-day competition, spin is again Guyana’s strength with First-Class leg-spinner Amir, left-arm spinners Anthony Adams and Gudakesh Motie and off-spinners LaFluer expected to do the bulk of the bowling.
John Campbell, Ramon Senior, Teswayne Creary and Oshane Walters will be keen to contribute with the bat for Jamaica while their leg-spinning Captain Donovan Nelson will
lead their bowling attack.
Barbados will depend on their Test opener and Skipper Kraigg Braithwaite to bat through the innings while other more flamboyant batmen like Anthony Alleyne, Kyle Mayers, Shane Parris and Keeper Mario Rampersaud will want to bat around him.
The Bajans posses one of the better pace attacks in the tournament with left-arm fast bowler Jerome Jones and Justin Greaves expected to share the new ball. Chaim Holder looks a quality off-spinner and should be among also the wickets in the one-day format.
The burly Rakheem Cornwall might not be the fittest player in the tournament but the Leewards Skipper can be among the most dangerous batsmen in the shorter format if he gets going and will need support from senior batsman Akeem Saunders if the Leewards are to do better than their last place finish in the three-day competition while Cornwall could also play a key role with the ball with his off-spin.
The Windwards have been disappointing as a team although Skipper Kaveem Hodge and Sunil Ambris finished among the top three-day run scorers and Larry Edwards only behind Davis among the wicket takers. They will need support from the others if they are to improve on their second to last finish in the three-day format.
The players will have the added incentive of being selected on a West Indies team for a quadrangular Under-19 tournament, featuring hosts India, Australia, West Indies and most likely Sri Lanka, next month.
All matches today are scheduled to start at 09:30hrs and with the weather in Georgetown being bright and sunny for the last few days, an entertaining competition is expected.
