A Guyanese Lieutenant has been placed on US$50,000 bail after he was charged with sodomy and
child molestation in the United States.
The Guyana Defence Force officer was pursuing a military course in Missouri, USA.
The army in a press statement yesterday afternoon said that Lieutenant Martin Douglas was arraigned on Thursday last before a judge on alleged sodomy and child molestation charges.
He has been placed on US $50,000 bail and is being held at the St Louis County Jail.
The army stated that the Guyana Government has dispatched staffers from its Embassy in Washington DC, to visit Douglas and assess his case with a view to providing legal assistance.
This newspaper has been reliably informed that the name of the officer which the army provided in its press release is incorrect. According to army sources, the officer’s name is Marvin Douglas instead of Martin Douglas.
Court documents which were seen by this newspaper stated that Douglas was arrested on August 3.
The documents were filed by an officer, Stephen Paul Reynolds. Douglas was arraigned in court on August 4 at 8:30 am. He was placed on a $50,000 cash
only bond. The court opposed the defendant posting 10% of the amount set for bond.
They also opposed the defendant being released by posting property and further they opposed a reduction in bond, or him being released on his own recognizance.
Kaieteur News understands that the rank “Marvin Douglas” who resides at Enmore Village, graduated from the Standard Officers’ course in 2007. He was stationed at the Training Corps, before moving to the Army’s Intelligence Unit.
Douglas was among several ranks that were sent aboard over two months ago.
The army stated that the Lieutenant’s next court appearance is scheduled for September 11, however court documents seen by this newspaper state that Douglas is to appear in court on September 19.
