– ahead of Lawyers’ World Cup start today
Six Guyanese Lawyers were selected to represent the West Indies Lawyers’ ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams for the Lawyers
Cricket World Cup that gets underway today in Barbados.
Attorney’s, Charles Ramson Jr. and Rajendra Ramroop, a former magistrate, have been selected for the West Indies ‘A’ team while Sanjeev Datadin, Timothy Jonas, Dennis Paul and Lyndon Amsterdam have been selected for the West Indies’ ‘B’ team.
The teams were selected after a series of trials in Guyana, Trinidad, and Barbados. The initial Lawyers World Cup was played in India and the second was played in England.
The tournament will see teams competing from Australia, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, England and host territory, West Indies. Sri Lanka and possibly India will be fielding two teams and the tournament will be divided into two Zones.
Zone ‘A’ featuring teams from Australia, Sri Lanka, West Indies (B) and Pakistan while Zone ‘B’ will comprise of teams from India ‘A’, England, Sri Lanka ‘B’ and West Indies ‘A’.
From Barbados, Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly and MP, Kenny Best, Attorney General, Adriel Brathwaite, Ralph Thorne and Dave Cumberbatch are some of the players expected to make up part of the two squads.
From Trinidad & Tobago, Prakash Moosai, Joseph Tam and Vasheist Kikoram all three High Court judges are also expected to be in the line-up.
Venues such as Empire, Wanderers, Carlton, Weymouth, Queens Park, St. Catherine and Lime have been chosen to host several of the matches, mostly of which will be played during the day.
There will be three night games played in the tournament primarily to accommodate the teams from Pakistan, who will be celebrating their Ramadan Season and do not eat during the days of the religious festival.
The University of the West Indies will host the three opening matches involving Australia, Sri Lanka and Pakistan and the West indies ‘A’ teams in addition to the two Semi-finals on August 17 and 18 respectively with the he final at the Kensington Oval on August 20.
