RHTY&SC 14th annual cricket Academy
Thirteen-year-old Daniel Lewis was named Cricketer of the Academy when the curtains came down on the 14th annual Cricket Academy of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club at the Area ‘H’ Ground.
Lewis, who represented Berbice at the Under-15 level this year, was selected by the Coaching staff based on his attitude, discipline, attendance and commitment.
A total of 75 young cricketers attended the Academy which was coordinated by the Cricket Development Committee of the club and conducted by Coaches Julian Moore, Winston Smith, Delbert Hicks and Renwick Batson.
Head Coach, Julian Moore described the 2011 Academy as highly successful, achieving all of its aims and objectives. The players ranging from ages 8 – 18 years spent the two weeks at the Academy improving their cricketing skills while also benefitting from lectures on topics of importance.
Special emphasis was placed on physical fitness and the importance of discipline. West Indies Cricketer, Devendra Bishoo also visited the Academy and delivered an inspirational lecture to the youths.
Secretary/CEO, Hilbert Foster described the Academy as the nursery of the cricket section of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club and said that the coaches were able to identify several promising players for the Club’s Under-13 and Under-15 teams.
He praised the work ethics of the four coaches and called on the young cricketers to work and practice hard if they want to be successful and be discipline at all times as it is the Key to Success.
Foster expressed his disappointment at the educational levels of some of the cricketers and encouraged them to focus more on this important part of their lives. Noting that reading is very important, he urged the attentive cricketers to develop a love for reading and research. Foster also disclosed that the 2012 cricket Academy would be much bigger with the club catering for 150 students and it would last for five weeks.
Academy Coordinator Moonish Singh said that the cost of hosting the event was very high but the RHTY&SC was quite satisfied that the funds were well invested. At the presentation ceremony a total of nine Awards were shared out as follows – Batsman of the Academy (Collis Cort), Bowler of the Academy (Jamal Jarvis), Most Discipline Player (Dinath Seenarine), Best Fielder (James Anderson), Most Punctual Player (Calvin Jeffrey), Best Female (Cindy Alexander), Most Improved (Lenny Sanichar), Most Cooperative (Kumar Madray) and Cricketer of the Academy (Daniel Lewis).
Bats, batting gloves, footballs, basketballs, footwear and educational materials presented to the top performers. The coaches and the catering staff also received special prizes while each member of Academy received colored t-shirts.
