Burnham’s legacy highlighted at 26th death anniversary commemoration
Leader, visionary, and innovator were among the many inspirational words used to describe the late Executive President of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana and Founder Leader of the People’s National Congress (PNC), Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham, at his 26th Death Anniversary.

The commemoration ceremony was held early yesterday morning amidst the tranquility of the Mausoleum, Place of Heroes, Seven Ponds, Botanical Gardens. The function was held under the theme ‘Legacy of the L.F.S.B. in this UN International Year for People of African Descent’.
Among the many who gathered to pay tribute were the Leader of the PNCR Robert Corbin; Presidential candidate David Granger; Executive Members of the Party; and Mayor of Georgetown Hamilton Green.
According to Yvonne Harewood-Benn, a former Minister in the PNC Government, Burnham’s death was a tremendous shock to his followers. She described him as a man of all times and the genuine owner of the ordinary people.
Harewood-Benn’s emotions of love and sadness covered the crowd as she reminisced on the late Burnham’s confidence, supremacy, and his capacity as a nation builder. She recounted that he always encouraged self-reliance, as independence, in his opinion, was not just having a national flag and a National Anthem.
Green, who is among the privileged PNCR members to have worked with the late Burnham, stated that the former leader would be vindicated when David Granger becomes the President of Guyana at the upcoming elections.
He commented that the late Burnham did not only inspire, enlighten, and lead, he was also a catalyst of change. This change was not limited to Guyana’s boundaries but stretched to the Caribbean in the establishment of the Caribbean Free Trade Association CARIFTA even before independence.
In addition, another of Burnham’s legacies was his efforts on Pan-Africanism in South Africa where apartheid stifled Africans.
On Friday evening, a symposium was held at the Saint Stanislaus College where the late Burnham’s legacy was revealed. It was suggested that the writings be compiled to maintain the true course of history.
Mr. Burnham became the first Executive President of Guyana in 1980, having led the nation to Independence in 1966 and to Republican status in 1970.
