Take 3rd spot in U-19 three-day tourney
It took Barbados just 28 minutes on the final day of their three-day Regional under-19 final round cricket match against Guyana to secure an emphatic innings and 52-run victory at Everest yesterday and finish third on the points table behind Champions Jamaica.
The Guyanese, who finished only above the Windwards and Leewards in the six-team competition, resumed the final day on 148-9, needing an unlikely 210 to make Barbados and Lloydel Lewis (9) was caught behind off off-spinner Chaim Holder who finished with 2-36 and 16 wickets in the rain affected competition.
The Guyanese, who fell for their second double digit score in the competition when they were bowled out for 87 in the first innings, feared slightly better as they were all out for 158 with Gudakesh Motie unbeaten on 16.
Pacer Justin Greaves, who also finished with 16 wickets, Jerome Jones, Kyle Mayers and Shane Parris each took two wickets for Barbados who were spearheaded to victory by a responsible unbeaten 146 from their Skipper and Test opener Kraigg Braithwaite.
At Bourda, Trinidad and Tobago required just 20 minutes yesterday to take the final three wickets and formalize a comprehensive innings and 122-run win over Leewards Islands.
Resuming at 106 for seven, facing a second innings deficit of 250, the Leewards were no match for Trinidad and Tobago on the third and final day of their fifth round WICB Regional Under-19 Championship match.
The victory was a well-earned one for T&T who collected 12.2 points to end on 39.5 points and finish second behind Jamaica, who moved to an unassailable 43.7 points when they defeated Windward Islands on Friday at DCC. The Leewards got 0.3 points from the match and ended bottom of the table on 10 points.
Left-arm spinner Javon Ali took the first two of the wickets to fall and the last man fell to a run out. Ali pulled off a remarkable catch off his own bowling – a one-handed diving effort to his right to send back Nino Henry for 27. In the following over Ali bowled Tristan Handley behind his back for 12. Last man Dymon Parris did not hang around and was run out without scoring.
The match will be remembered for the brilliant 187 retired hurt made by T&T’s Emmanuel Lett who, in his second match at this level, batted for close to six hours before he lost fluids and could not continue shortly before tea on the second day.
The final Points standings reads, Jamaica 42.7, T&T 39.5, Barbados 36.5, Guyana 18.9, Windwards 10.4 and Leewards 10.
