While the majority of the secondary school population may be relishing the ‘No Child Left Behind’ policy of the Ministry of Education, some teachers are peeved at the outcome.
Many teachers are of the view that lethargic students choose not to study and or show-up for examinations since they are cognizant that they will be promoted to the next form regardless of their poor performances.
According to the teachers, in many instances, when students do not perform well they are blamed, but the reality is that sometimes the conditions in which teachers operate are not conducive to teaching.
Teachers emphasized that remedial classes in Mathematics and English are being offered to students who failed their promotional examinations. However, the turn out of the students is very low and the next school year looks bleak.
The teachers noted that the number of students who attend is a reflection that students are not taking their studies seriously during the school year.
Some teachers contended that the remedial programme would not make a difference to the students’ performances since the classrooms are overcrowded in some schools and the one-year syllabus cannot be taught in six weeks.
A regular classroom has between 30 and 40 students to one teacher. However, in the remedial classrooms in some schools a teacher is tasked with over 60 students at once.
The teachers emphasized that a remedial classroom should comprise 15 students as this would allow the necessary attention and time per student.
A teacher commented that when the programme commenced in July, during the first week there were adequate staff to students but the teachers were told to leave and only four teachers are expected at each school. The teachers noted that the classrooms are chaotic.
According to Assistant Chief Education Officer (Secondary), Doodmattie Singh, those allegations are untrue.
The teachers stressed that the Ministry sent the one-year syllabus for the teachers to utilize in the classrooms. However, the teachers contended that it would be impossible to finish the syllabus since it would be unfair to rush the lessons. They noted that this would be reflected in the post test results.
