Guyana Youth Corps, which is a non-profit organization based in the United States has concluded a successful and informative presentation on suicide and pediatric asthma with staffers (nurses) from the Georgetown Public Hospital.
The group, which was founded by Dr. Tara Singh, was formally incorporated in 1998 and has collaborated with the Ministry of Health and the hospital to make this venture possible.
The group has also been collaborating with the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security to strengthen the Foster Care Programme in Guyana.
The seminar was facilitated by Dr. Vyas Persaud, a Psychiatrist practising in New York and Dr. Acklema Mohammad, a Pediatrician, Head of the Pediatric Department in a New York based hospital.
Both doctors combine to have more than 30 years experience in their respective fields.
The first presentation was made on Paediatric Asthma. Here the main objective was to learn about asthma, the risk factors in developing asthma, diagnosis, treatment, control and prevention.
The second presentation was on Suicide and those objectives and nurses were cautioned to be more aware of the Epidemiological factors of Suicide, and to be more understanding to gender, race, religion, marital status, occupation substance use, inter alia, as they pertain to suicide.
The organizers also saw the need to understand the sociological, psychological, biological and genetic factors about suicide. And lastly, the participants were asked to be more able to predict the risk of suicide.
The main aim of the group’s first visit to Guyana was to contribute to the capacity building and to promote education in the health sector and ultimately, Guyana.
Moreover, the group also presented a laptop and projector to the hospital which is primarily geared at facilitating the virtual classroom sessions for the Critical Care Nursing Programme which was launched last July.
The group also made donations of medical and other supplies to various Care Centers around the country.
Guyana Youth Corps hopes to return to Guyana and to GPHC some time in the near future to carry out more humanitarian efforts. The members of the Board of Directors are all native Guyanese and it is their desire to assist in whatever way possible.
The group is currently in the process of formulating teaching modules for the Nursing and Medical staff of GPHC. This will be facilitated via the internet and should be a long-term continuous venture.
