Bhajmattie, called Rita, whose stall was burnt to ashes last Sunday in the La Penitence Market, is claiming that she is disgusted about the situation. She stated that no one from the fire department has contacted her since the fire.
She said that on the morning of the fire, she spoke with a representative from the fire service, who told her that the investigators would return the following day to carry out investigations.
According to her, up to yesterday morning, this was not so. It is alleged that she was told to wait until persons from the fire service arrived to the scene, to carry out their investigations before she could part-take in any cleaning exercise.
Rita said that after she had realized that nobody had come to investigate the fire, she went to the Mayor and City Council to seek advice.
“All they do is tek my name and number and address and tell me but go into IPED and get a loan to build back my stall and they aint even telling me nothing about what caused the fire or nothing, I told them that my estimated loss was around $600,000. I don’t even know what to do right now. I just fed up”.
Bhajmattie said that she is not familiar with the name of the person that she spoke with, but said that it was a constable attached to the Special branch at the City Council.
Bhajmattie said that she has been a market vendor for 19 years and it is where her means of income come from and because of this situation, she cannot open the other stall which she operates at the front of the market.
It is alleged that when she visited her stall yesterday morning she realized that persons had already started to move her stuff from the stall, unknown to her.
She said that she wants the investigations to be over, so that she could get back to her routines, since she has other business to attend to.
