One day after a picture of an elderly and disabled 87-year-old woman slumped in a wheelchair and left to burn in the hot sun for over an hour outside of the Deeds Registry in New Amsterdam, Berbice an immediate investigation has been launched.
The elderly woman had to wait for nearly an hour in the hot sun outside the Deeds Registry Building, downstairs of the New Amsterdam High Court, on Wednesday, before an employee came out just to take her fingerprints for a transaction.
It is understood that the Ministry of Legal Affairs in Georgetown was very embarrassed when the staff saw the photograph.
The ministry immediately made calls to the staff in New Amsterdam to inquire of the nature of the unpleasant situation.
Yesterday, the Deputy Registrar of the Deeds Registry was dispatched to Berbice to have first hand information on what transpired. A report has also been ordered and disciplinary action might be taken.
The woman’s niece had taken her to do a transaction but the woman was not attended to until after nearly an hour.
The woman fell asleep in the wheel chair in the hot sun, while her niece was inside, trying to get someone’s attention.
The senior citizen had to be brought in closer and closer to the shade as the shadows shrunk.
Eventually, the wheelchair reached a point where it could not move forward any further, since the steps were there. Employee after employee passed the woman in the hot sun and said nothing or did nothing.
It was nearly an hour later when she was attended to. The woman should have been given first priority, being both a senior citizen and differently.
Kaieteur News understands that such a behaviour is a common practice at this particular entity with staff showing scant regards for disable, pregnant and or elderly persons.
The Deeds Registry and the entire High Court, like many government and other buildings in Guyana, do not have accommodation for differently able persons.
