The Berbice Cricket Board on Wednesday hosted its first ever Tribute to Grounds Men Programme at the Annex Restaurant in Rose Hall Town. The programme sponsored by the Ansa McAl Group of Companies saw five long serving Grounds Men being honoured for their outstanding contributions to the development of cricket in the Ancient County.
Honoured were Tekha Pooran of Port Mourant, Roger Mc Donald of Albion, Mohamed Samad of Blairmont, Ravi Narine of Rose Hall Town and Samatally Balgobin of Skeldon.
Chairman of the Berbice Cricket Board Special Events Committee, Hilbert Foster stated that Grounds Men for too long were viewed as unsung heroes of cricket as the players are always the ones in the spotlight.
He noted that the work of Grounds Men was very important since good cricket pitches are vital to the development of ‘quality’ players. Foster also praised the awardees for their dedication, hard work and passion, while urging them to continue in the same path and to work along with the BCB as it strives to develop cricket even further.
Foster expressed gratitude to the Ansa McAl Group of Companies for donating five hampers that were presented to the Grounds Men.
BCB Treasurer Anil Beharry described the awardees as silent heroes who are always in the background, whose work is critical to successful cricket matches. Board President Keith Foster said that the work of the Grounds Men at the five most important venues in Berbice where the majority of major matches are played, have been impacting in a positive way over the years.
He urged them to not only uphold their high standards but to work harder to prepare better pitches. Foster stated that under his administration, all stakeholders in Berbice cricket would be recognised.
Responding on behalf of the awardees, Ravi Narine expressed gratitude to the BCB for making them feel special. He praised the Board for its outstanding work and pledged their {Grounds Men} cooperation for all of the BCB’s developmental programmes.
Following the presentation of the Ansa McAl hampers, the awardees were special guests at a Luncheon hosted by the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club and the BCB.
