The building that has been in existence for more than a century has begun to fall apart, a historical piece, a bargainer’s attraction.
Over the past years Bourda Market has been housing many vending stalls, all of them shoppers’ haven for a good bargain
From vegetable to clothing, kitchen utensils, toiletries, and stationeries, the Bourda Market is truly a ‘one stop shop’.
However vendors are now being forced to exit the market and discontinue selling as its condition over the years has gradually deteriorated.
When it rains the building leaks; when the wind blows the building creaks; and when the sun shines vendors are faced with immense heat.
Vendors related that sometimes they are even afraid to enter the building as it looks as though it may collapse anytime soon.
Apart from the scornful look and gaseous smell of the pile of garbage in and around the compound, the place is described as ‘not worthy anymore’ by vendors and shoppers.
When Kaieteur News visited the market there were those who said that it will be a great joy “when” the building is renovated as it is a part of our history and gain us pride.
“However pride is not more than safety. What if is a foreigner the building collapse on? Dem gun get sue,” said one vendor.
Vendors of the Bourda Market expressed grave concerns and anger over the garbage pile up. They hope that the Mayor and City Council deals with this “over bearing” issue.
Public Relations Officer, Royston King, said that the matter will be investigated and dealt with as soon as possible. King also stated that he will get a full report on the condition of the building and suggestions as to what need fixing, by Monday.
“I will try my utmost to deal with the issue,” said King.
