Berbice not scared of Gayle for Jam Zone Masters’ cup semis
Tickets for the inaugural Jam Zone Masters’ Cup t20 cricket competition at the Guyana National Stadium on
August 12 & 14 went on sale yesterday in Berbice, and Universal DVD Berbice Titans, Coach Julian Moore is banking on self belief among his players and a large Berbice support at Providence to help his team to success.
“Whenever Berbice play in these big matches our fans come down to the Stadium to support us and that really motivates the players.
I know we will have large support again and while we have full respect for (Chris) Gayle and what he can do in t20 cricket we are in no way afraid of him,” assistant Berbice coach Moore said on a live TV show on Wednesday night on LRTV Channel 10 in Berbice.
Berbice are the defending national t20 Champions and Moore reminded that when they last played against Gayle, off-spinner Krishendat Ramoo dismissed the explosive Jamaican left-hander.
Test fast bowler Brandon Bess is expected to use the new ball for Berbice but while Moore would not comment on the game plan, indications are that Ramoo could open the bowling since Moore said his team was practicing hard and have done their home work on the opposition and also watched Gayle in the recent IPL.
“Spin could trouble him (Gayle) a bit before he settles in and Providence is usually slow with some turn and that could work in our favour.
We also expect a lot from (Devendra) Bishoo who has been very impressive since his International debut in the last World Cup,” Moore added.
Moore informed that practice matches have been arranged for the Berbice side which also includes Narsingh Deonarine, Royston Crandon, and Jonathon Foo.
Berbice, like they did in the last competition when overseas players were available, have again opted not to use any of the four foreign players allowed for a team.
“It is good to have International stars and nobody can take away their value not only to the teams they play for but to the whole competition, but we believe that in t20 cricket, team cricket could be far more critical that individual stars since you want everyone to chip in and not just depend on a few to carry the burden,” Moore said.
“We have been working on the mental aspects of our cricket and while we don’t have any overseas Internationals in our team, we have players who have played at the highest level and understand what is required in this format of the game so we are confident of making Berbice proud again,” Moore explained.
Moore however feels that playing against the big names in Regional cricket is very good for especially the young local players and commended Hits and Jams Entertainment for collaborating with the Guyana Cricket Board to have cricket in this year’s Jam Zone Summer Break.
All of the teams involved have been given funds to help with their preparation and the winners will collect $2 million, the runner-up $1 million and the third placed side $400,000.
Tickets cost $1,000 for the first night when New Line Cavaliers play Georgetown Pitbulls from 17:00hrs and Hits and Jams Super Stars oppose Berbice from 21:00hrs in the semi-finals.
Tickets for the final night cost $1,500 when the third place play-off match starts at 16:00hrs and the Final commences at 20:00hrs.
Tickets cost double on the nights of the matches at the venues and are on sale at Ashmins and the Guyana Cricket Board Office in Georgetown along with Caribbean Cuisine on Number 2 Public Road and Melani’s Fast Food outlet in Pit Street New Amsterdam.
The competition is being played with all WICB approved conditions and polices for Regional t20 cricket and the organizers say they are happy to adhere to what the WICB and GCB wants since like all their events their primary objective is providing high class entertainment and International Standards.
