Non-profit elections watchdog body, Electoral Assistance Bureau (EAB), has announced plans for the upcoming general elections slated for later this year.
According to the EAB, which has been monitoring elections since 1992, it would be involved in testing the voters’ list and providing hotline and open house services to the public wishing to check their names on the list or report any irregularities.
EAB will also be conducting public awareness; training and placing observers at all polling stations to observe the polling process; and monitoring the count and award of seats to the National Assembly.
“In addition, the EAB would conduct any post-election audits if necessary and a final review. The EAB has already written to GECOM requesting accreditation as a local observer body.
We commenced preparations for the 2011 Elections in April 2011 with fundraising and setting up of a suitable office.”
Already, the non-governmental organization has established an office at 30 North Road, Bourda.
“The office set up has been accomplished with the support of the sponsors, which provided a suitable office space; the British High Commission, which provided an institutional strengthening grant, and donations from the private sector. The EAB wishes to thank all those who have been assisting with the start up of the 2011 program of work.”
The Project Director, Abbas Mancey, is manning the office along with the Project Administrator, Susan Stephens, an office assistant and security.
“On July 27, 2011 the EAB held an inception review session with election observation coordinators from Administrative Regions to examine lessons learned during the previous election observation exercise and plan for the upcoming program of work. The EAB is currently engaging other donors to secure the remainder of support required for the complete work program.”
EAB’s Council of Management includes Father Malcolm Rodrigues – Chairman; Simone Mangal – Secretary/Finance Officer and members, David Yhann, David Singh, Teni Housty and George Simon.
Mancey, the Project Director, is an ex-officio member of the Council, EAB said.
EAB is a Guyanese, non-partisan, non-profit, nongovernmental organization formed in June 1991, with the main objective of assisting in the establishment, maintenance and preservation of democracy, particularly with regards to the election process.
