– placed on $780,000 bail
Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton yesterday granted bail to a 36-year-old Annandale man who allegedly
drove his motor car in a dangerous manner while being under the influence of alcohol, thus causing the death of a 37-year-old female Call Centre employee.
The accused was not required to plead to the indictable charge of causing death by dangerous driving while he denied the charge of driving under the influence (DUI).
When Lakeram Prasad appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court he heard that the police alleged that on July 21 at High Street, Kingston, he drove motor vehicle PDD 7478 in a manner dangerous to the public as a consequence causing the death of Rozena Razack.
It was further alleged that Prasad on the day in question drove motor vehicle PDD 7478 when under the influence of alcohol to such an extent as to be incapable of having control of the said vehicle, having 105 micrograms of alcohol in his system.
Prasad, of Annandale Railway, East Coast Demerara, was represented by Attorney at Law Vic Puran who declared that his client is not a flight risk, stating that he was placed on $50,000 station bail by the police in the matter. Puran also asked for bail in a reasonable sum.
No facts of what transpired on the day of the incident were presented in the court, however, Police Prosecutor Corporal Venetta Pindar had no objections to bail, but requested that the accused lodge his passport and report to Brickdam Police Station every Monday and Friday.
The application was approved and Prasad was granted bail to the tune of $750,000 on the causing death by dangerous driving charge and $30,000 for the offence of driving under the influence. He is expected to make his next court appearance on September 16.
