An eight-year-old child was killed almost instantly as he stood transfixed while a car came hurtling into his direction. His three siblings and one cousin ran for their lives, however.
Joshua Daniels, of the North West District, was pronounced dead on arrival at the West Demerara Regional Hospital around 16:30 hours yesterday. The lad had only come down to spend the August vacation with his elder sister.
The incident occurred yesterday in front of the lad sister’s home at Ruimzeight, West Coast Demerara. An eyewitness to the accident, Fizul Khan, who is also the dead child’s brother-in-law said that Joshua, his three siblings and a cousin were playing next to his car on the bridge.
“I see the car flipping in the air and coming towards de road corner and the rest ah children run away but Joshua stand up staring.” Within seconds, Khan said, the car crashed, flipped over the trench, broke through a bridge and then slammed Joshua into his parked car.
What angered residents and eyewitnesses was the fact that the driver, instead of rendering assistance to the injured child, merely came out of his car, took out a cardboard box and joined another vehicle.
“This man like he don’t have a heart. He just jump out the car pick up this box and jump into another vehicle…Is people around here go and move that child”.
It is not clear when the police caught the man but this publication was told that the driver was subsequently detained and is assisting with investigations.
Many who gathered at the scene expressed their concern over the reckless use of the roadway.
“Imagine this child playing on the bridge and met his death and this driver was speeding. He break down a bridge, killed that child and damaged a parked car,” an eyewitness lamented.
In the meantime residents of the area, and more so the relatives of the child, are hoping that justice will be served since they expressed the view that tougher penalties should be implemented for persons who are convicted on causing death by dangerous driving.
The issue of police not being present to offer evidence in traffic matters is also a major reason for errant drivers walking free.
