Still $105,000 short but…
The Council of the Amateur Swimming Association of Trinidad and Tobago (ASATT) unanimously agreed to continue plans to host the 17th Annual Goodwill Swim Meet scheduled for 12 – 14 August 2011 at the Centre of Excellence Macoya.
This decision was made at an emergency meeting held on Tuesday evening. The shortfall was further reduced from the $150,000 for the local team and the running of the event, to the $105,000. This was achieved through keen negotiations with many suppliers to reduce prices, removal of some line items from the budget and some sponsors coming on board. While there is still a far way to go, the council believes that cancellation was not an option as arrangements were too far ahead, commitments have been received from foreign teams, and the country would have been embarrassed by such a decision.
The meeting which was chaired by ASATT’s President Lindsay Gillette, agreed to maintain awareness in the media about the meet to encourage sponsorship. The President also committed to work with his Executive and the Organising Committee to directly target sponsors to contribute whatever they could with a view of offsetting the entire shortfall.
ASATT also has an ongoing Fundraising Raffle which the meeting agreed proceeds of which would be immediately used to offset expenses. Additionally in order to immediately engage the public with the need for funding with the meet, it was agreed that the team management and the Goodwill Organising Committee would organise members of the National Team to venture to malls and other public places to sell these raffle tickets to assist with the meet sponsorship during this weekend.
At a meeting of the ASATT Executive, SPORTT and Ministry of Sport at the Ministry on July 22, it was suggested that due to current financial constraints of SPORTT the meet be cancelled. It was however the consensus of Tuesday’s ASATT Council Meeting that Goodwill was too important a pillar in our swimmer development to be cancelled. Despite non-exhaustion of the Association’s budgeted allocation at SPORTT, the reality was that according to the Ministry of Sport and the Sport Company of Trinidad and Tobago, there are no available funds to give to the meet.
While cash is needed for the meet, ASATT is also appealing to service providers who can assist with meals, drinks, transport, tents, chairs, jerseys, deejay, and ambulance services to also get on board. They view this as an ideal marketing and branding opportunity for sponsors who would be supporting 130 athletes aged 7 – 18 from Barbados, Suriname, Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago. The event is expected to attract hundreds of supporters over the three days of competition.
