Over the coming months, disability awareness groups in Regions Two, Four, Six and Ten will be receiving brand new communication equipment to aid an ongoing disability awareness programme as part of the ‘It’s About Ability’ Project.
The presentation of these pieces of equipment is part of the ‘It’s About Ability’ Project being executed by the National Commission on Disability (NCD), the Guyana Council of Organisations for Persons with Disabilities and the Guyana Community Based Rehabilitation Programme (GCBR) and funded by UNICEF since 2008.
The main aim of this project is to train a cadre of trainers; to further train members of various groups including decision makers, teachers, parents, youth and children about the rights of persons with disabilities, in order to bring about a positive change in attitudes and behaviours towards persons with disabilities.
Project Officer, Zoan Williams, at the National Commission on Disability said, “Persons with disabilities are human beings just the same as everyone else and as such they should enjoy the same human rights as persons living without disabilities.
“The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the Guyana Persons with Disability Act of 2010 are the two main tools that are used in this project to bring about a positive attitude to society thereby reducing the barriers persons with disabilities face every day of their lives”.
These pieces of equipment would support the various regions in the continuation of their activities in the respective regions by raising awareness towards the rights of persons living with disabilities.
The equipment would be presented individually to the regions mentioned above. Region Six would receive their equipment on August 4; Region Two would receive theirs on August 10; Region Ten would receive theirs on September 1, and Region Four would receive theirs September 13.
