Dear Editor,
Works Services Group is a contract section of the Ministry of Public Works. It is responsible for building and maintaining of roads, bridges and the international airport etc. The staff all have a contract signed by the Permanent Secretary of Ministry Of Public Works stating that every six months they are entitled to a gratuity.
However, since 2009 they have not been paid any gratuity. Several contacts with the Permanent Secretary and the Minister proved futile.
The junior staff, however, had to meet with the President himself to discuss the matter. They were paid one gratuity instead of the three that was owed to them. Several other attempts to meet with the President continued to prove futile. I am in sympathy with these people because some or I should say most of them earn under $35,000. What about the single parents in these departments? How are they making out? And what about those who are coming from out of town? Since 2002 these people had a raise in salary. Can the same money that was paid years ago still make it now? Look at the cost of living then and now.
Mr. President, please help them. You said on the air that you are looking into people’s salaries, but nothing has been done till now.
When the cane cutters need more money they strike whenever they think is time for a raise in pay. We are all human. Please see with these poor people and help them. I am in deep sympathy with them and you should also.
