While the rest of the nation were busily attending the Emancipation celebrations at the National Park on Monday last, more than a dozen of the nation’s top referees/judges were engaged in several hours of productive discussions that addressed the intricacies of refereeing and judging at the Civil Defence Commission, Thomas lands.
Contrary to an initial report in this newspaper that suggested that the course was instigated out of a concern for the aptitude of the officials, Kaieteur Sport was corrected that the session was planned to build on the plethora of knowledge of the local officials.
President of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC), Peter Abdool pointed out that the course was organized to broaden the scope of local officials to fill the officiating vacuum in the region and not out of any concern of the competence of the local officials.
Course facilitator, WBC referee/judge, Wilfred Boodhoo had intimated that officials of the WBC had a vested interest in the advancement of officials in the South American region and were anxious to have a pool of these officials to fill the officiating vacuum.
The newly accredited officials are now capable of performing such functions after Mr. Abdool would have formally lodged the request to WBC officials. He has committed to this task immediately.
Kaieteur Sport regrets any inconvenience and/or embarrassment that may have been caused by the initial article which seemed to have suggested that the forum was organized in response to ineptitude and/or incompetence on the part of the local pool of officials.
