– Inadequate financial resources cited
The opening of the New Stelling View Mall, which was slated for July 30, has been delayed. The setback is due to inadequate financial resources available to complete the project.
According to Schulder Griffith, Clerk of Markets, the third week in August is now the scheduled timeframe given for the opening of the facility. He noted that the project is a public-private initiative and the Mayor and City Council has not provided any financial resources towards the construction of the facility.
When completed, the complex would benefit 60 vendors. Griffith stated that vendors who are utilising the eastern section of the Stabroek Market would be relocated to the new facility.
The New Stelling View Mall is located within the vicinity of the Georgetown Ferry Stelling and the Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security.
Griffith stressed that the fenced establishment is expected to be a safe shopping environment with security services coming from the City Constabulary and private security in an arrangement that was made by vendors.
The complex was designed to facilitate orderly vending and shopping in a clean, healthy and comfortable environment. In addition to the usual sale of clothing, food items, and art and craft, beautician services would be available.
