Final 4 Rd-of-16 games set for MSC Ground today
By Franklin Wilson
Fans attending the final four round-of-16 matches in the inaugural GT&T FastBall knockout football
competition are in for a big treat with some of the top marksmen in the tournament gracing the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground tonight.
The top goal scorer to date, Carlos Kingston of Golden Stars B team who has scored 10-goals so far is aiming to continue his prolific run of form when he leads his side against Upper Demerara’s Pioneers.
Golden Stars needled Port Kaituma to reach this stage while Pioneers were in a rampaging mood when they banged their way past GFC Masters 4-0 to book their round-of-16 spot. Randy Stoby with 6 goals to his name will provide formidable support for Kingston in what is anticipated to be a fierce battle.
Pioneers will depend on Randy Small and veteran ‘John’ Wayne Milo who have scored a brace each in the tournament so far to orchestrate another big win for them but they will be smart enough not to take Golden Stars for granted.
Daddy’s Enterprise, the second of three East Coast Demerara teams that will be showcasing their skills tonight, will be led by their leading goal scorer Seon Austin who has 4 to his name. Their opponents, Adams Rockers gained this lifeline as a result of Reggae Boyz being knocked-out of the tournament for fielding an ineligible player.
Reggae Boyz had defeated Adam’s Rockers 2-1 in their round-of-32 showdown and will be keen to grab this chance with all their might as
they eye a place in the quarterfinals. Their leading scorer, Toney ‘Spirit’ Adams, also has a total of 4 goals.
The other East Coast team, BV Triumph United A defeated a veteran side from the Ancient County of Berbice, Hearts of Oak but will have to dig even deeper into their reservoir of experience if they are to overcome formidable opponents in Bakewell Topp XX A.
There has been many upsets in the tournament so far and the pundits have predicted a few more before Sunday’s final.
Topp XX, despite losing the services of the inspirational Collie ‘Hitman’ Hercules (9 goals) and Kayode McKinnon, the team is still one of the favorites to win this competition. Keon Sears who has also scored 9 goals to date has taken up the lead marksman role and is quite capable of being a menace to any defence on his night. Jamie Wilson and Michael Crandon will add depth to the Topp XX charge.
BV Triumph will look to their leading scorer Rayon Hopkinson for inspiration in their quest for a win with support from goalkeeper Linden Dennis, Colin Jones and Shawn Daniels.
Tonight’s other game will see Amelia’s Ward A and Castello Skeemers locking horns. Ezera Green (5 goals) and Travis Waterton (4 goals) will be at the helm of the Amelia’s Ward attack while for the Skeemers, Quincy Wills (8 goals) and Deshane Wills (4 goals) will lead their charge. FastBall time today is 18:30hrs.
