The Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) 2nd Annual Elite Training Programme got off to a successful start on Friday last at the Port Mourant Cricket Ground. Thirty-one of the 37 players selected for the programme attended the opening session including West Indies players Devendra Bishoo, Sewnarine Chattergoon Brandon Bess and Royston Crandon.
Senior national players Veerasammy Permaul, Jonathan Foo, Richard Ramdeen, Anthony Bramble, Delbert Hicks, Assad Fudadin, Esuan Crandon and Keon Joseph were also in attendance.
The players were involved in a tense two hour physical exercise session under the watchful eyes of senior Coaches Adrian Amsterdam, Julian Moore and Winston Smith.
Amsterdam disclosed that with most of the players unfit after a long layoff from the sport due to the rainy weather pattern, the emphasis was to slowly get them into shape physically before starting practice on the pitch. The players are expected to train at home and would be closely monitored by the coaches.
Chairman of the Berbice Cricket Board Special Events Committee Hilbert Foster, coordinator of the programme, disclosed that the sessions would be held twice a week – Wednesday and Friday – while several practice matches would be organised to get the players ready for the upcoming Guyana Cricket Board tournaments. The programme will last for two months.
